American Warlords is the story of the greatest “team of rivals” since the days of Lincoln.
In a lifetime shaped by politics, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proved himself a master manipulator of Congress, the press, and the public. But when war in Europe and Asia threatened America’s shores, FDR found himself in a world turned upside down, where his friends became his foes, his enemies his allies. To help wage democracy’s first “total war,” he turned to one of history’s most remarkable triumvirates.
Henry Stimson, an old-money Republican from Long Island, rallied to FDR’s banner to lead the Army as Secretary of War, and championed innovative weapons that shape our world today. General George C. Marshall argued with Roosevelt over grand strategy, but he built the world’s greatest war machine and willingly sacrificed his dream of leading the invasion of Europe that made his protégé, Dwight Eisenhower, a legend. Admiral Ernest J. King, a hard-drinking, irascible fighter who “destroyed” Pearl Harbor in a prewar naval exercise, understood how to fight Japan, but he also battled the Army, the Air Force, Douglas MacArthur, and his British allies as they moved armies and fleets across the globe.
These commanders threw off sparks whenever they clashed: Generals against politicians, Army versus Navy. But those sparks lit the fire of victory. During four years of bitter warfare, FDR’s lieutenants learned to set aside deep personal, political, and professional differences and pull a nation through the twentieth century’s darkest days.
Encircling Roosevelt’s warlords—and sometimes bitterly at odds with them—was a colorful cast of the Second World War’s giants: Winston Churchill, MacArthur, Josef Stalin, Eisenhower, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Charles de Gaulle. These and other larger-than-life figures enrich a sweeping story of an era brimming with steel, fire, and blood.
Drawing upon a wealth of primary sources, American Warlords goes behind closed doors to give readers an intimate, often surprising view of titans who led America from isolation to the summit of global power. Written in a robust, engaging style, author Jonathan W. Jordan offers a vivid portrait of four extraordinary Americans in the eye of war’s hurricane.

We may have Drag Queen Story Hour in our elementary schools but thank God we’re not speaking German!

I thought the US only came into the war, that some of us had already been fighting for 15 months, after the Japs sucker punched them? Ow!
Oh I forgot, we’re in US revisionist history days which is frequently seen in troubled times & empires end times. MAGA-tard anti-maskers on the right who get confused by the word ‘allies’ (what dat?) because they learned their history, US single handedly won ww2, from listening to the Rush-maddog-Limbaugh show - Rush would never lie. They (Right leaning PTB media empire) pay Rush $80 million a year to speak the unvarnished truth - Covid & climate change & everything else that’s contrary to our made up belief system & overlords profits is a hoax by default.
On the other side the left wing-nuts are deep into their history rewriting campaign too. Iconoclast neo Red Guards. Statues ain’t the half of it. They have entire battalions of cancel culture warriors searching decades of media, movies, songs, books, news articles for any & all woke blasphemy & blasphemers both of which they gleefully destroy. Ruining people’s lives for alleged inappropriate comments from 30 years ago. These are the behaviours of a failed state & a morally bankrupt populous.
‘Boeing communications chief resigns over decades-old article on women in combat’
“SEATTLE (Reuters) - Boeing Co’s (BA.N) communications chief Niel Golightly abruptly resigned on Thursday, following an employee’s complaint over an article the former U.S. military pilot wrote 33 years ago arguing women should not serve in combat.”
“My article was a 29-year-old Cold War navy pilot’s misguided contribution to a debate that was live at the time,” Golightly said in a statement included in Boeing’s announcement.”

Congrats, witch hunters you just destroyed a man’s career & reputation over a 30 year old opinion FFS. At worse the guy WAS a jerk. It’s not a hanging offence. A public apology should have been enough. They cheered this. When there is no shame left, you’re done.
Oh and Trumpy just unleashed America’s new secret police on lefty protesters. Another banana republic milestone has been reached & a nasty precented has been set. Who’s next?
C’mon, try and look on the bright side

I too struggle to recall who beyond Germany and the US were fighting?
I’ve heard stories that my father went somewhere in 1939 but he was from the bottom of the Sth Island of NZ, not the US, so maybe he went to the Riviera for a couple of years before the US liberated the free world?
Not disputing that the US aided the Allied cause, but if it was simply them Vs the Nazi’s then D Day would have been launched from Coney Island, which is a hell of a long way from Normandy in case you’re wondering.
And apnea, it was more like 26 months not 15 that they spent neutral. There is speculation that even after Pearl Harbour they might have stayed out of the European theatre but for the fact Hitler first announced war on them rather than the other way round.

In fairness, Lend Lease dated from eight months before Pearl Harbour; and Roosevelt, who was sympathetic to those battling Germany, had to contend with massive isolationism - in Congress & the wider public - there was a desire to stay out of those alarmingly frequent European wars. Proportionate to the threat, 90% of their resources were put into the European theatre, and the remainder into the Pacific war.
Of course, in terms of covering every aspect of the war - that’s probably unrealistic. As a work of history, it’s quite unreasonable to expect it to encompass current media controversies, Trump, the protests, etc. (It’s that “why don’t Medieval experts include The Beatles & Reaganomics” issue all over again) This book is merely concentrating on several members of the American High Command.

The FDR administration has been doing war work with industry, technology and the military years before Pearl Harbor. They thought war was inevitable many of the industrial efforts were considered ‘jobs’ programs so congress could cash in at the district and state level and were not overt defense spending per say.
That said, America was most successful because of our industrial power and because FDR did not fancy himself as a General or military strategist. He delegated most of the military strategy to the military.
Stalin and Churchill micro-managed the military, industry and every thing else in their respective countries.

Wow. I actually have to agree with @caesar again. The most significant American contribution to WWII, which started in Europe in 1939 when Hitler invaded Poland, were “Eagle” Squadrons. American volunteer fighter pilots who fought for the RAF and the RCAF (Canada).
“The concept of American volunteers fighting with combatant nations, and serving international relief agencies before the United States declared war dated back to World War I. The Lafayette Escadrille of the French Aéronautique Militaire was the most famous, and led to an American fascination with these “cowboys of the air.” When World War II broke out in Europe in 1939, Americans were encouraged by their example to volunteer for service in the new war.
Meanwhile in Canada, WWI Ace Billy Bishop, a recipient of the Victoria Cross, and a WWI American pilot volunteer and artist Clayton Knight created the Clayton Knight Committee with the purpose of recruiting and training Americans for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Before the end of 1941 Bishop and Knight had recruited over 7,000 Americans, though fewer than 15 percent became pilots. Almost all the pilots went to Britain to serve with the Royal Air Force (RAF). While the motivation to serve as a recruiter or early pilot varied greatly from person to person, many of these people thrived on adventure and their love of flying.”
There were also American fighter pilots in the Asian theater pre-1941. They were collectively dubbed “Flying Tigers.” They fought under the flag of the Republic of China and included a handful of pilots from what would later become known as the “Blacksheep Squadron,” commanded by one-time volunteer pilot Colonel Gregory “Pappy” Boyington. Boyington and his Blacksheep inspired a TV series. The Blacksheep are also noteworthy for their plane of choice- the F4-Corsair, possibly the most beautiful fighter from the Second World War.

Front line units (heroes) were the emotional investment the news reels, print and radio media could “sell” the war to the public. But it was the “arsenal of democracy” that saved the world. America could supply a two ocean global war, moving the bullets, beans and bandages to the fronts, and still have the manpower to to field armies to fight those fronts. The unsung heroes were the merchant sailors, civilians, who suffered in the arctic waters sailing to Murmansk, weathered the storms of the north Atlantic, died by drowning and burning in the wake of U boat attacks in the Atlantic, Kamikaze attacks in the Pacific theater.
Because they were “Technically” non-combatants, they DID NOT receive GI Benefits, or any post-war compensation for wounds easily as grievous as any suffered by those in the uniform services.
NOTHING-often suffering a lifetime of pain and neglect. I had grand-parents and great uncles who fought in the Marianas campaign, who served on a Coast Guard cutter on D-Day, who drove Sherman’s for Patton’s 3rd army when they liberated Buchenwald concentration camp, and who vanished in a ball of fire during the Ploesti raid. All but one returned, silent, prematurely old and quietly broken like so many of that wonderful generation. Only one lived long enough to be honored when they dedicated the WW2 memorial in Washington, DC. The only thing he EVER said about the war was how much he admired the “Merchies.” I can only think how disappointed, maybe horrified, at the state of the nation they fought so hard to save. Sorry. I get emotional about this.

Thank you rmoor.
What would Trump, or a person like him, have done if he’d been President in 1941. Perhaps there’s an alternative history novel idea for any prospective novelist.
