It’s like Argentina transplanting a group of colonists onto the Isle of Wight and promptly seceding from Britain.

Britain was in control of the island for close to 150 years before Argentina decides to invade it.
Yeah, that’s JUST like Argentina moving into the Isle of Wight.
I mean, come one, Argentina has been such a stable country politically — they should have it back.

The coloniser or imperialist always wants to start the clock after THEY take possession (can’t imagine why). Regardless of another country’s territorial integrity or right to self-determination.
There is no legitimacy or justice in theft and colonialism. (I could give a precis of 800 years of colonialism, which had a devastating impact on my own country).
The stability of the country is not determinative, because the coloniser can always make the argument that the natives are not “mature” enough to take control of their own destiny. That’s how they responded to the American and Irish revolutions and calls for Indian independence.
However, the Argentinian and British governments were both playing politics with the issue at the time.
History has delivered a verdict on imperialism, we can agree.

@caesar963 No offence to you or the “devastating impact” of colonialism in your country but Speaking as somebody who is actually from the Falkland Islands, we are happy being apart of the UK (We even had a vote on it.). We don’t want to be part of Argentina. IIRC Argentina also decided to invade/annex us in 1982 and then they failed.
Britain did have a presence on the Island that predated Argentina and so did France and Spain. Argentina’s came after and they ended up mutinying.
The Islands are allowed govern themselves under British rule and we are all quite happy about it too.
Colonialism was a dark time for Europe and it’s still looked back on in shame but seriously I’m tired of everybody pointing a finger at Britain. It wasn’t just Britain. It was EVERYBODY: The Dutch, French, Germans, Belgum, Spain, Portuguese and the British ect. And they should all be held accountable for what they did.
Again no offence intended but the only people who actually bothered to ask our opinion on whose country we want to be a part of is the UK. And WE CHOSE THE UK.
Again, I really mean no offence, but I am just tired of being ignored.

@EleintSlayer - No offence taken, and I certainly don’t wish to cause any to you either. It’s also interesting to get the perspective of a Falkland Islander.
The argument is based on the wider territorial claim because to ground self-determination on a transplanted population doing a sectarian headcount will not ever settle a territorial dispute satisfactorily and comprehensively. It will, at some level, always remain an open question.
Amongst all of those brutal imperialist powers, it’s the conduct of the British that is at issue here. (I’m also not trying to engage in Brit-bashing, I normally take the opposite side in those disputes, because attack is too easy).
Colonies of “planters” were deposited in my country, and the usual abuses, tyranny, injustice and corruption ensued. The destructive impact, in terms of repression, forced emigration, famine and penal laws are well known.
When we had elections there was extensive gerrymandering to favour the imported minority. Such votes are always contrived and unfree.
Colonialism is theft, even if it an historical theft.
Your point of view is valuable, but others also have substantial knowledge of invasion, subjection and dispossessed. It’s no fun to be on the receiving end!
Not to play the victim card unduly, but our concerns were ignored as well, for eight centuries.

I will try to redo it. Had problems with the title length and i am new to inaudible so i couldnt figure out how to fix it. At some point i got a good conversion and thought i good file to share. I will try again tonight and upload some more books.
