I use this thing when a file is giving me issues or I want to join a bunch of lil files together. It is faster than any other I’ve found and can do OPUS, which might be a bane to audiophiles.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I tired the app. The interface is very straight-forward but the vbr scale is too simplistic. It doesn’t show what kbps is selected, just a blank scale (better/worse). Also, on windows there’s no way to scroll down. Resizing windows screen did not change the app window so I couldn’t see all the options. :( I couldn’t find a current version demo on youtube so out of options. App doesn’t have “preference tab” or much else in the menus.
Anycase, it’s using the same opensource encoder most converters use so it’s not really better than others, and the interface needs work.
Probable perfect if used on a phone for personal conversion for playback. I didn’t test that.
If you have access to a PC, “InAudible 1.94″ allows you to choose from several encoders, has more options and better interface.
Other good, free apps are “Mp3-MakeItOne”, “Free:AC”, for more advanced users: Audacity…among others.

Vote +1 for InAudible. Super piece of software. I use Mp3DirectCut in batch processing mode to join .mp3’s. Anyone have recommendation for joining .m4a’s and .m4b’s?

Well, you don’t need to join split files when using Smart Audiobook Player. It recognizes slit files as one book showing the full playtime.
And you never have to commit the crime of quality degradation by converting to mp3.
Also the first posting plays fine. It’s always best not to monkey with the original file. just use the Smart app i mentioned to play books. Trust the awesomeness, let the player do the work and don’t ask how the app can just play anything. Don’t strain the monkey brain
