Would the complete jacka** responsible for the new deal, the 1d10t who created the modern welfare state, cover up the truth about 12/7/41? Absolutely.

While I am no fan of FDR, I’ve never seen enough evidence to convince me of FDR knowing the attack was IMMINET. Sure, our sanctions and diplomatic processes were causing tensions, and our interactions with the Japanese diplomats were at the breaking point, I’ve still never seen evidence to say “the planes are on there way mr president” “ok, just let them strike”.
As for the book… I’m a big Toland fan but this isn’t the best book out there on Pearl.

I think its likely quite accurate, and its not a black or white issue. Im not comparing FDR and Stalin, but the Soviet dictator also ignored countless intelligence predicting Barbarossa, not because he wanted a good excuse to go to war, but simply he could not believe Hitler would so easily reneg on Molotov-Ribbentrop, the ink barely dry. I only insert to demonstrate there are different reasons why a consensus or leader ignores new information.
back to FDR. Japan was always going to attack, so this isn’t black flag event. As US was not going to attack Japan without a good reason, FDR, believing US had to help the Allies, was left waiting for a good enough justification to bring US into war.
Knowing FDR was so Anti-Nazi from the start, and seeing how at that point it looked like Nazis were winning the European war in record time, he likely saw Pearl harbour as the quickest way into the war.
I think very difficult decision, and if made, then one has to live with that on their conscious. However there are reasonable logical arguments that many more people inc Americans may have died had US not entered the war at that stage, when the Nazis had their first real setback at Moscow.
One indisputable fact is war with Japan was always on the cards, independently of the European war.
I deffo think some of the historiography of ww2 is guff and very much as in “victors write the history”.
In fact my biggest criticism is indirectly related to the 2 nukes at end of war. I think they were justified by Allies (in part) by Japan’s sneak attack of PH, and other considerations. if FDR and others knew in advance this was coming and sort of acted dumb, it alters some of the justification for nuking Japan, or at least the second one.
On the other hand i don’t think FDR would have nuked Japan as casually as Truman. But one cant know such a thing for sure.
I like Toland’s histories. Without being a crank or revisionist he feels more self critical from an allied perspective than many of his peers.
