Publisher’s Summary
War presents the most degraded moral environment humanity creates. Individuality is subsumed in collective violence, and humanity is obscured as a faceless, merciless enemy.
A barbaric logic has guided the conduct of war throughout history. Yet as Cathal Nolan reveals in this powerful book, even as war can obliterate hope and decency at the grand level it simultaneously produces conditions that permit astonishing exceptions of mercy and shared dignity. Pulling the trigger is usually both the expedient thing and required by war’s grim and remorseless calculus. Yet somehow the trigger is not always pulled. A different choice is made. Restraint triumphs. Humanity is rediscovered and honored in a flash of recognition.
This book explores acts of singular mercy, giving them form and substance - across wars, causes, and opposing uniforms. These acts demand our attention not only for the moral uplift they supply but because they challenge assumptions about humanity itself. Rising above ordinary courage, they may ultimately transcend our understanding, entering the realm of the ineffable. Nevertheless, acts of mercy in war are not the provenance of saints but of ordinary people who perform them at great personal risk. As much or more than the normal war hero stories, we must recognize the extraordinary courage of the merciful in war.

Time to eff the ineffable. “Yet somehow the trigger is not always pulled.” - Or people even shoot to miss. From Second World War studies, it emerged that a small % actually shot to kill (these were vast civilian armies conscripted after all). Severe conditioning might iron that human moment out, however. PTSD also reveals that crucial humanity.
Another good one, opacupa.

@ caesar963, Im guessing that we have both read/listened to some of the same books on the subject of how many people can press a trigger. It would certainly explain on how the both the Germain and Russian soldier was superior in the 40s, longer training before the war began??
Its an incredibly difficult subject. The vast majority of WW1 conscripts apparently fought and died with little training? Did they just turn up in an enviorenment where theres was to do and die?
I remember reading a book called The Sharp End approx 30 years ago. I havnt found any newer bookjs on this subject.
Happy New Year to you and all the sober contributers on audiobookbay.

Sounds like a great read! I would think that mercy and compassion would depend on the situation. The Germans didn’t seem to have much as they stormed all over Europe and especially Russia, and Russia would have none when they began their long and arduous battle to Berlin. But I imagine the huge number of people who had that compassion and used it when they could. Look forward to this and Thank you for sharing!
