The scary part is that Russia now denies that the WW2 started in 1939 with Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact and subsequent invasion of Poland by nazis and soviets. And that Putin created a cult of WW2 with a motto “We can repeat it again”.

The Poles haven’t forgotten the joint fascist/Marxist joint attack, of course.
You’d think that the last thing the Russians would want is a repeat of the Great Patriotic War (this would be mark 3), given the unimaginable scale of their casualties & suffering on the last occasion.
The Russians did defeat the Nazis, but if the war had a victor, it was America. Putin would be no stranger to the concept & utility of Winston Smith’s Memory Hole.
You could argue that the Second World War began in Spain in 1936, or China in 1937.

I believe Russians least of all want the repeat of WWII, most families lost someone in that war. It is those that never had any great wars on their soil that warmongering non-stop.
I do not condone Putin for sabre rattling, but I feel I do understand that when one is surrounded by foreign military bases and former “comrades” that switched sides and became enemies, one has no choice but to get into defensive position, talk tough and show off one’s military might.
I hope we never see another world war. Humanity will not survive it.

@Magic - Added to that, he’s likely trying to unite the population against foreign foes; distract them from looking too closely at his rule.

@caesar Putin is doing everything to distract the increasingly distressed population from his failed rule. He even delivered two “short and victorious wars” - 2008 in Georgia and 2014 in Crimea. As for the victory cult and repeating it all, well, he can afford to say these things ONLY because the real generation who actually saw and remembers that war is pretty much gone. My grandfather served in the red army during that war, and he never celebrated victory, his only celebration was “the day the war finally ended” and nothing else. Had these people been alive to tell Putin off, they would have, and no doubt.

Very true, bugagagashenki, and another war in Syria. It should always be remembered that it was the Russian soldier, male & female, who defeated the Nazis.
