The series is widely acclaimed, but they are just for entertainment in the end. Graham Greene had a term for the pure-entertainment thrillers he sometimes wrote. I don’t remember the term now, it would fit with this series buy Kerr. And to me, that is the problem. The background of Nazi fascism, and the segregation & extermination of millions of Jews (not to mention Roma, disabled, and leftists), is just part of the fun in these novels. And from what I could tell, the protagonist is, in the end, a collaborator. I recently read Dan Stones book, The Holocaust: an Unfinished History, and I can’t possibly stomach this series now. Nor could I stomach a series of detective novels set in current-day Israel, where are the majority of people go on living their daily lives despite the genocide and the fascism there.
