I had no great expectations from this series of books but boy was I wrong!
Characters (and countries) are so realistically and artfully depicted, you feel you are right there in the middle of action, intrigue, love story, madness… and of course, war.
This book is EXTREMELY historically accurate up to alien invasion and thereafter also extremely plausible in portraying reactions of various countries and their leaders.
Very jighly recommended!

Love Turtledove’s stories, how plausibly exploits an historical inflection point, and builds a wholly viable alternative universe. My biggest issue: he cannot write dialogue worth beans. I’ve read most of his stuff (Gun’s of the south, How few Remain,etc.) and TRIED to listen to the audio book versions, but he makes my ears bleed. May try this again, but…

This is superb, there are new narrators recently done. Be nice to see them here. Better than the older ones
Sadly his wonderful Videssos books, based on history of Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium) and made into a few Sci Fi series.
If you get a chance read “Misplaced Legion” a good starter of a 4 part.
